Blackstreet: Joy
I’ve always enjoyed Blackstreet and felt they needed more attention because most of their songs were amazing. “Joy” is one of the smooth RB songs that just came together in the right places. I love the orchestra bits with the strings. By the way, this music video version of this song has more strings and guitar than the radio version.
I also like that this music shows a black man being there for his young daughter and watching her at her most important times of her life. This is something we need more of in the black community.
Now, listen carefully and imagine Michael Jackson’s voice in the main melody. This song was meant for Michael Jackson. MJ helped write the song with Teddy Riley.
As stated here, a certain Mahalia Jackson is listed as one of the writers/composers of the song. Mahalia Jackson was real artist, but I don't think she had anything to do with the song. You can hear the similarities to the tune in his “Will You Be There”.
It was meant for MJ's “Dangerous” joint, but MJ decided not to release it. So, does that mean there is a MJ version of “Joy” sitting around? Probably so.
