Michael Piller died at age 57.

Star Trek writer and creator lost his battle with cancer. This guy was responsible for recharging Star Trek: TNG with new blood and energy. After Gene made a mess of writing team and the show, Piller came in and took charge of the show, giving it focus.

The man was also responsible for one of the most important two episodes in Trekland, the Best of Both Worlds. He also co-created Star Trek DS9 and VOY. He was the creator of the popular show Dead Zone.

"Without him, lots of writers wouldn't have gotten their first break," said Lynda Foley, a Voyager intern during Piller's tenure there in the show's second season. "When I would get writer's block or have problems with rewrites, he always gave the same advice: 'It's always about the human condition. Go back to that and you'll find your story.'"

He helped Ron Moore get on the writing staff of TNG. He helped many writers that are really big today get their first break.
