Trick R Treat

The bottom line is Trick R Treat is an enjoyable horror film that pays tribute to many of the old Halloween movies from the 70s and 80s. Director/writer Michael Dougherty does a smashup job bringing his vision to screen. The movie is creepy and funny at the same time, and I’ve always liked the humor that was usually in these old 70s and 80s horror films.

TrT is an anthology of stories that are interconnected through cameos with other characters in each story. Plus, there is this creepy masked creature named Sam that wonders in and out of each story. I’m not going to give away what Sam is but I loved the reveal; let’s just say he’s not a normal kid. He receives his own story at the end of the movie, which is probably the best of the bunch.

And, part of the fun is going back and watching the movie over again just to see the various characters show up in the other stories. (If you look closely at the opening story, you can see some interesting cameo by characters and creatures that will become important to the stories.)

There are five rules that keep these stories you cannot break. Here they are from the wiki page.

1. Always check your candy.
2. Never blow out a jack-o'-lantern before midnight.
3. Wear a costume.
4. Hand out sweets to trick-or-treaters.
5. Never go out alone.

Even the score brings back memories of horror movies of the past. Composer Douglas Pipes does a great job with a creepy full-blown orchestra horror score. It reminds me of the Scream and the Psycho scores.

Like I wrote before, I really enjoyed this movie. However, it should be noted that Trick R Treat was supposed to be released on October 5, 2007 in theaters. WB kept pushing the release date back and back and then forced it to direct to DVD. This movie should have been released in theaters.

Make sure to go out and rent this movie.

Grade: B+

Just another reason to see this movie.

Yes, Anna Paquin does play a part in the movie. Because this movie was filmed between 06-07, Anna looks younger. This was filmed before True Blood and there is something rather amusing about her character here and the one played on True Blood. Just watch the movie to see what I mean.

Trick R Treat is a modern day Creepshow. I loved it. The Anna Paquin storyline took me by surprise.

Can't wait for the second film.

I didn't see the Paquin story going in the direction that it did. I really liked the Creepshow feel to it too.

And, there is already talk of a second film
