Street Kings
Damn you, Keanu!
Keanu Reeves pretty much ruins this movie all by himself. Reeves is unconvincing as a corrupt detective. For some reason, Reeves is unable to get rid of his Ted Logan voice from the Bill and Ted movies and it just becomes laughable. Reeves is awful really awful.
The rest of the cast ranges from bad to fair. Forest Whitaker is pretty good but he’s just playing a clone version of his character in The Shield. Hugh Laurie, uh the guy that plays Dr. Gregory House from the show House, plays the exact character from his show with just a different name. I like both Jay Mohr and Cedric the Entertainer, but they are annoying in this movie. Did I mention that guy from Prison Break is also in the movie (Amaury Nolasco)?
As some have mentioned in other reviews, this movie feels like a remake to Dark Blue, which is also about a corrupt police force. But, it also rips off The Shield way too much, but simply can’t maintain a gritty and compelling tone like that show and Training Day.
Actually, the movie is pretty boring once you get past the first 20 minutes as it follows along every Corrupt Cop storyline. Hmm, it strangely has the same feel as Righteous Kill, and we know how much I hated that movie.
Second time director David Ayer doesn’t bring much to the table. There isn’t much style to his scenes and it feels like a bad episode of Law and Order. As I mentioned earlier in the review, he wrote Training Day, Dark Blue, and S.W.A.T. (Screenplay). He barrows from all three movies, but those movies are better films than this shit.
The movie is tedious, but Keanu Reeves just pushes it over the crap-o-meter. Reeves simply can’t act, and he can’t carry a movie.
