World’s Greatest Dad

World’s Greatest Dad

World’s Greatest Dad is a twisted little movie that made me both uncomfortable and bewildered, but in a good way. WGD won’t be for everyone because there are some darker elements involve death and sex, but those willing to dive in with be surprised on how well-written and acted this small really is.

From the title and the first half of the film, you'll get the idea that the movie is about one thing and one thing only. However, the movie completely shifts to something much darker and twisted. In a strange, it is somewhat fitting as well. I'm being vague because I don't want to spoil it. If you've ever attempted to write fiction or nonfiction writing, you will understand.

Robin Williams plays another teacher, and it is familiar territory for him, but he is still amazing in this restrained role. And, his character isn’t exactly that significantly different than Williams' other “teacher” roles. However, Williams has to carry almost every scene and he does so delightfully well. There are times when the audience will question some of his ethics, but Williams will keep them on his side.

Alexie Gilmore plays his love interest…of sorts. Her character is also a teacher at the same school he’s teaching, and the both of them are keeping their relationship under wraps. I really like Alexie Gilmore in the love interest role, and she’s just so damn cute too. I also like that we’re not entirely sure if she’s cheating on Williams or not, and it never fully answers that question. Her character is certainly more complex than many love interest roles we’ve seen before.

Bobcat Goldthwait, yeah the Zed guy from the Police Academy movies, is the writer and director. I can see the natural progression with Bobcat’s Shakes the Clown to WGD. Like I stated before, the movie has a dark sense of humor and drama, so it might turn some people off, but there is a heartwarming message thrown in for good measure too...kind of. World’s Greatest Dad isn’t prefect, certain subplots were completely dropped mid-way through, but it is something new and interesting in the same way as Observe & Report was earlier.
