Do You Remember D’Angelo?

D’Angelo did a music video naked as the camera panned around his body way back in the day. The song is complete throwback to Prince’s songs from the 80s, and to be honest it is a very good song. However, 4 minutes of a naked D’Angelo is bit too much for me.

“How does it feel?”

Many people took notice of him with the smooth jazz-blues style song “Brown Sugar”. His first album was named Brown Sugar, and it was released in 1995. The album was named after the song.

Some have stated he's really singing about drugs. I'm not sure about that, but given his history it isn’t too out of the question. But, I love this song.

D'Angelo came out the gate strong with this song and his early album. Then all of a sudden he just disappeared after the release of his second album. There were rumors of a release of a new album all throughout the 2000s, but only leaked unfinished tracks appeared to surface.

One such song that was leaked was “1000 Deaths”. It seems very raw, but I can see what he was going for.

It should be noted that D'Angelo has had countless run-ins with drugs and law enforcement groups. One mugshot surfaced of D'Angelo looking about 30 pounds heavier than before and a little out of it. That was back in 2005, he was arrested again in 2010 for picking up an undercover cop for prostitution. This kind of stuff has probably put a damper on his new stuff. And, to be fair, people have probably forgotten about him.

I hope he gets back in treatment and starts making music again, because lord knows we need more artists with his skills.
