Holy crap, that was bad...

Back when I still watched ST: Voyager, I remembered seeing promotions for this show on the UPN network. My first thought was, wow, do we really need a sitcom based on the Civil War and slavery?

UPN thought we did. Way to keep it timely, UPN. How about an hour-long drama dealing with issues in the Civil War era? Nope, they’d rather do this mess.

I still remember the controversy over this show.

Many people saw this show as being racist and unnecessary. Keep in mind, this was UPN and they needed something to keep people watching the Network. They knew the protesting and calls for the show to be pulled would generate heat (free promotion).

And, people fell for it. If people ignored it, the show would have been another shitty sitcom that only lasted one episode.

And you can tell with this promo below that UPN was patting themselves on the back with the gamble. (What kills me is the pilot episode was re-edited, cutting out some even more offensive stuff.)

When you hype Lincoln in a dress, you don’t have much of a show.
