The Nines (2007)
I remember hearing about this movie in a podcast a few weeks ago and decided to give this movie a try. I didn't know much about the story or the characters. I just knew that there were three stories and all the actors played different parts in each story.
It's hard to really describe the stories and the overall theme without giving away too much. They are interconnected with threads (literally too) and it's difficult to discuss them. Each story can almost stand on their own, but by the end you will get a clear picture as to how these stories are connected, and that's where John August's script and direction really work. The common thread of 'the nines' will keep you entertained. Keep in mind, this movie isn't for everyone.
Here are the three stories in the movie.
The Prisoner: A Hollywood actor finds himself on the wrong side of the law and ends up under house arrest in another person's house. I actually liked this one a lot. It ends in a very strange manner.
Reality Television: This story deals with a TV writer that has a reality show surrounding him while he attempts to produce a new drama of his own. Or does he?
Knowing: A family find themselves stuck in the woods and things go wrong from there.
Ryan Reynolds plays the main character in all three stories and all the characters are completely different from each other. He does an amazing job too with the characters. However, Melissa McCarthy is the one that steals the show. She a heavy-set woman that is very attractive and has a nice smile. All of her characters in the story are charming in their own way. (She plays herself in one of the stories!)
Many will not like this movie, but if you want a high concept sci-fi/character movie, you might want to check it out. It only rewards you if think about what is actually happening in the movie.
