Jumper (2008)

I said "Jump", might as well Jump-er.

Jumper

I wished this movie could have jumped into a better script and director.

Jumper is one of those movies that could have been better, but never grows out of its WB/CW stage of acting and storytelling. The concept is sound and interesting, but it is never fully explored in the actual film. Hell, even the history is touched upon and it sounds interesting. But the movie doesn’t want to dive deep into those issues and spends too much time with a lame love story instead. But, that’s only part of its problem.

Hayden Christensen’s acting never rises above a douche bag character, and his acting chops are very limited. It feels like he’s channeling Anakin Skywalker throughout the movie. While I cared about Anakin, I certainly never cared about his character David Rice. He just comes across as a jerk that has super powers. He never uses his powers to save anyone up until the end and even that seems tacked on.

Don’t get me started with him pining over a (She’s not that hot) girl from back in the day. In order to get the teenage girls into the theater, it feels like the writers forced this whole love story into the script. But, the script has other problems as well.

The story is dense, but not in a good way. Many characters and subplots are never explored or fleshed out. And, the movie needed to get into more of these things to keep people interested, but it feels like the studio wanted to bring in the teenage crowd by making the movie dumber.

The movie had so much potential.

However, few things did work:

The Paladin subplot: I just wished they gave these guys a bigger amount of screen.

Samuel L. Jackson: He’s just pissed that Hayden Christensen betrayed him in Star Wars, and he wants mother’fing payback.

The Actual Jumping: It was cool when they showed it, which wasn’t enough.

Grade: D+

(Like it or not, there will be a Jumper II.)
