Zombieland

Zombieland

Think of Zombieland as an American version of Shaun of the Dead. Zombieland is fast and funny. The movie also has a few serious sides to it, but not as much as Shaun. The movie makes fun of all the zombie movie conventions while telling an action story as well. If you like your horror movies bloody, gory and damn funny, this movie is for you.

Like many other zombie movies before, the world is completely overrun by zombies. The movie does a good showing a destroyed landscape with tanks and burnt out cars. At times, there isn’t anything moving

In Zombieland, the undead are fast moving zombies at that. They don’t just sprint; they break out into full on runs. I find the fast moving zombies scarier anyway. While the zombies are mostly used as a butt-end of a joke, they are still disgusting and gory. And, that’s what makes Zombieland so interesting to watch because it does keep the atmosphere of a horror film.

Jesse Eisenberg plays the nerdy lead character (Think Michael Cera type). Michael Cera and Eisenberg are pretty much the same, and Eisenberg has carried over his character from Adventureland. Eisenberg knows how to make Columbus relatable, and not annoying.

His partner is the extremely badass Woody Harrelson who plays Tallahassee. Tallahassee seems to enjoy killing zombies in various ways. Harrelson also appears to enjoy the role as well. He’s basically a redneck superhero that does all these gun-moving stunts. I can’t think of any other person that could play Tallahassee.

Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin are at what they do, which I won’t give away here. They can hold their own against the zombie horde as much as the guys. But, they do cause some problems for the guys throughout the movie.

The only huge problem I have with the movie is the change of tone from Zombie Flick to Teen Drama. At a certain point in the middle of the story, the movie takes a left turn and becomes a teen drama. I thought these scenes were the weakest of the story. I kept thinking, “more zombie killings, please.”

Putting that flaw aside, there is a great cameo that shouldn’t be spoiled. I was spoiled because I read an article on the subject, but you should keep away from those discussions. Another great moment is a scene involving Columbus and a hot girl sleeping over at his apartment. It doesn’t turn out the way you think.

Zombieland is fun, bloody and violent.

Grade: B+

Even as Zombies, the customers are always right.
