Southland Killed by Jay Leno

Southland Killed by Jay Leno

Congratulations, NBC, you are the new FOX. You’re acting and behaving like the FOX Network of old.

NBC, it is time to let Jay Leno go. He’s doing more harm than good. Sure, you’re saving money by having a mildly entertaining show on your network. Jay Leno shows hasn’t been doing that well in the ratings, but that’s not what NBC cares about. They care about making ends meet. If they means poor ratings, that doesn’t matter because Leno’s show is cheap to make, and something that dramas aren’t. At this point, they don’t even care about becoming number one again, and that’s a sad state of affairs.

The 10 PM timeslot has always been known for grittier shows, mostly dramas. Now that unfunny man Jay Leno has soaked up all the 10 spots on NBC’s weekly schedule, there really isn’t any room for these dramas. Southland is one of the first shows to feel the Jay Leno curse.

Southland was up for another season with six episodes in the can. Then NBC came around and canceled it before it even premiered. What? So you paid for six episodes and weren’t even going to try to show them before canceling them? Does that sound like a good business plan?

Southland creator John Wells had this to say about the cancellation.

From NPR, (("I'm disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success." ))

For me, I still can’t believe NBC would make such a bad business decision. It seems they’re too arrogant to admit the Jay Leno Show was a mistake.

Here's the best part, From USA Today

((Averaging 5.9 million viewers for the first two weeks of the TV season, Leno is down 25% from the dramas NBC aired in that hour last year, several of which were later canceled. Among adults ages 18 to 49, it's down 41%. ))

Keep in mind that the Leno show is still very cheap.

Cheap and ok ratings is probably exactly what they are looking for with Jay Leno.

The scary thing is, if Jay sticks around long enough, they may just replace him with another show like it when he finally hangs it up for good.

You're right, and I can see other networks doing the same thing too when their money starts going south.
