Stargate II: the movie?

Hmm, looks like Dean Devlin may get his sequel wish after all. He wants to make two follow-ups to his first movie.

(("When we created the original Stargate, we always envisioned it as a trilogy, and, unfortunately, the way in which the movie got made, we didn't really have control over [it]," Devlin (The Triangle) said in an interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 20. "We didn't have the ability to do two and three. MGM had then made a big commitment to doing the [SG-1] series, and they were worried that the movie could interfere with the series. Well, now that the series has run so successfully for so long and spawned a second series, and there's a whole new regime at MGM, they're not really worried about [it]. The series is running great on its own. And they think there is an audience out there who would like to see what parts two and ... three were intended to be. Because there was a larger story arc that we had in mind, and we never got to explore it so I think it will be very exciting to actually get to go do parts two and three."))

Sounds like Devlin wants a reboot. Here’s the kicker: Devlin hated the TV show, and he even made some sly remarks about the show on his Commentary. He even wanted everyone to know that he had nothing to do with the TV show. Now, given that the show is very popular, it is probably the only reason why MGM is even interested in making two movies.

(("I'd want the films to stay on track for what the original three were planned to be," said Devlin. "I'd want to let the series stand on their own."))

If I were Dean Devlin, I’d start out with a completely new casts for the movie and just give nods to the continuity of SG1. Have it be in the same universe, but a story on its own, like the Star Trek shows and movies.

None of this means that they will actually make the movies.

i think the success of the tv show greatly overshadows the original success of the movie. if they would make another movie that is going to ignore sg-1, at least wait until sg-1 is finally over, simply because they have too large of a fan base that can be pissed off, including myself. though admitidly, i would not mind seeing james spader reprise the role of daniel jackson. the rest of the cast can be left out.

you're right it would piss off a lot of fans. I wonder if he's trying to that on purpose. I agree with you, they should wait until the series runs it course.

i read some interesting news in tv guide this week. apparently the producers of sg-1 and atlantis are thinking about doing their own SG motion picture. of course it is only thinking on the idea, but i am sure there will be some studio political drama in the near future.

Hey, thanks for the info, Paul. Man, the message boards are all taking about Devlin vs. the TV producers. And you’re correct; there will be some political studio stuff to come.
