Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (Part 1 of 2)

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Back in 1993, a movie based on the Batman cartoon show helmed by Bruce Timm was released in theaters. It was called Mask of the Phantasm. The movie wasn’t supposed to be released into the theaters, but to the home market. However, WB forced the makers of the animated film to release the movie on a bigger scale. Well, the movie sort of bombed at the box office, but don’t let that keep you away from watching this movie. Besides Batman Begins, These guys were able to finally get Batman right on the Big Screen

This movie has some similarities to the recent Batman Begins movie. The movie was both a sequel and a prequel to the Batman animated series. The movie is set during the present and the past. The story reveals a pre-Batman Bruce Wayne trying out his crime fight skills during the night, while falling in love during the day with a young lady. The movie really has a lot of energy during these ‘flashback’ scenes, while helping forward the current story. There’s just something special about watching a young Wayne dealing with becoming a crime fighter and falling in love. In the movie, he has to make a choice between the two, and this provides some good drama.

The Animation is a slight step up from the TV show, but not nearly as good as Superman or Justice League shows. At this time, computer enhancement was still in its development stages. Gotham City never looked as dark and interesting as it does in this movie. The music was helmed by the late Shirley Walker and is one of the biggest highlights of the movie. Walker was finally able to create her own themes without having to use elements of Danny Elfman’s Batman themes (89).

Bruce:“I just saw the worst thing ever.”

Alfred: “What’s that, sir?”

Batman: “The movie Batman & Robin.”

Alfred: “Bloody turd that is, sir.”
