The person who makes this movie really work is Robert Downey Jr.. Downey is Tony Stark. They both have similar histories of letting substance abuse take control of their lives. Stark starts out as a carefree rich guy with an amazing mind. He bangs hot chicks, drinks and parties hard. And, we still like him because he the type of party guy that wants everyone in on the party.
Yet, he doesn’t really care about the shady business practices that his family company is involved in. It changes when terrorists in Afghanistan kidnap him. He’s fitted with a machine to keep him alive by the Shaun Toub. Toub ends up becoming Stark’s friend in prison. Stark comes face to face with fact his weapons hurt people and do get into the wrong hands. Downey Jr. really shines in these life-changing scenes. (Btw, you will love when he puts on the first Iron Man suit.)
The rest of the cast is also first-class too. Terrence Howard as Jim Rhodes is being set up as for War Machine, and there is a nod to that in the movie. Here’s something funny Jeff Bridges is playing a version Steve Ballmer from MS. Even Gwyneth Paltrow is good in her limited role. (It feels like her role was severely cut from the final cut.)
You know what, F’ it. Let’s expand this review to three parts, because I am going to watch the movie again tonight.
