GameSpot and more Jeff Gerstmann Fallout

GameSpot and more Jeff Gerstmann Fallout ((Long time video game reviewer Alex Navarro, a frequent contributor to GameSpot's podcast The HotSpot and go-to video review narrator, will be leaving the site, according to the site's Editorial Director Ricardo Torres.)) Yes, another writer for Gamespot is leaving the company . His name is Alex Navarro, and he's jumping ship. That makes two writers leaving since the firing of Gerstmann. The first one was Frank Provo and he's made some statements about why he quit , and they're damming allegations. (("I believe CNet management let Jeff go for all the wrong reasons," wrote the reviewer "I believe CNet intends to soften the site's tone and push for higher scores to make advertisers happy.")) (("I feel sad about the whole thing, but I can't write for a site that could one day punish me for honesty.")) Provo has come out swinging. There have been rumors that the Marketing and...

Norbit

Image
Norbit Congratulations, Eddie Murphy, you’ve made a movie that’s worst than even The Adventures of Pluto Nash . I don’t know how you did it, but you did. Murphy plays three different roles in the movie, but none of them are remotely funny. The main one is Norbit, a nerdy character who has married a super bully and extremely fat Rasputia (played by Murphy too). Rasputia is a horrible character. She has no redeeming qualities. She runs over dogs and cheats on her husband. She’s just disgusting to look at and Eddie Murphy isn’t interested in making her complex in any way. This is the same Murphy they did a wonderful job in Dreamgirls. What the hell happened? There is not a single good thing in this movie worth mentioning. When you combine the shitty powers of Cuba Gooding Jr. , Marlon Wayans and Eddie Griffin , you get an aimless mess of a movie with these three bad actors. I’m all for crude humor, but this movie is just dreadful. It feels like a child w...

Juno

Image
Juno Since I have to write a complete review for this movie for class, I will give you a completely different type of review for the blog. Remember, I had to see this film for homework and write a review on it. So, like the Miami Vice review I did a while ago, I will interview myself for the review. (The other review will end up being like my normal format.) Tell me about Juno? About the character or the actual movie? Here we go again. About the movie. Great, right off the bat you’re being an asshole. Then again, you’re me and I you. Yeah, you’re calling yourself an asshole. Anyway, Juno is about a teenage girl that finds herself knocked up by a geek and considers giving her baby up for adoption. She finds the perfect couple for the job, or at least she thinks so. So, did you like the movie? Yep, I loved it. It has a witty heart, and the characters have some interesting things to say. With all the dirty talk, it has a charm about it. I think the ...

Will Smith getting jiggy with Scientology

Will Smith getting jiggy with Scientology http://rantocracy.blogspot.com/2008/01/open-letter-to-will-smith.html Head to MC’s blog and read his open letter to Will Smith. I like Will Smith and I like a lot of his acting. I think he’s a charming man. And, he has one of the greatest rap songs of all times ( Summertime ). Plus, he’s had some major box office hits of late. The man was unstoppable…that is until Xenu got hold of him. Yeah, Will Smith, the guy that’s killed more aliens in movies than anyone else, is becoming a member of the Super-Cult of Scientology. While I am open to pretty much all religions, I am bias of The Church of Scientology. I can’t stand these Scientologist types. I simply don’t trust them. Then I read MC’s post about Big Willy switching to this silly science fiction cult. Jada Pinkett-Smith is a member, and I guess her arm pulling (nagging) has finally forced him to the dark side. If he starts behaving crazy and making stupid sta...

Justice - D.A.N.C.E

Image
Justice-Dance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo_QVq2lGMs I was over a friend’s house late night/early morning playing videogames (RPG) and then we switched to MTV’s HD music video channel and started to watch music videos, making fun of the un-cool ones and marveling at the good ones. The link above is to one of the better ones. I really enjoyed the moving cgi/animation on the shirts. The music has a very 70s feel to it, but the FX is where the video stands out. We’ll be seeing this more in ads just you wait. Side note: Why am I seeing more men with bad hair wearing those tight pants like the guy’s in the videos. Men aren’t supposed to wear night clothing, unless you’re Superman or Luke Skywalker. No more tight pants, Join me.

Starship Troopers III (Direct to Video/DVD)

Image
Starship Troopers III? I didn’t even know anything about this movie. http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/01/09/first-look-starship-troopers-3/ I enjoy Paul Verhoeven’s work and his style. He loves mixing nudity and violence like no other. Total Recall and Basic Instinct were great movies, and they just show that he has a twisted freaky mind. When Starship Troopers came out in 97, I was more than a little disappointed with the material. However, I’ve come to enjoy it more on repeated viewing. I also liked the subtext of the Military based community that planet has in this version of the future. There was a good amount of social commentary buried in with the violence and sex. Plus, Casper Van Dien is reprising his role. I guess those late Showtime movies haven’t paid the bills. Man, this guy can’t act. Back in the first movie, which was the worst actor Denise Richards or Casper Van Dien ? By the way, here’s a listing of the sequels and spin offs from the St...

Cloverfield Monster Details

Well, it looks like the producers have described the monster in detail. http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/01/09/cloverfield-building-a-better-monster/ They also mention the parasites/smaller monster creatures. How does this relate to the infection subplot? (As part of a “post-birth ritual,” as Abrams describes it, the monster is seen early on scratching his back on a building (destroying it in the process), to remove a layer of parasites that are set loose to wreak their own havoc on the city.) Okay, this really has me interested. How does that ‘We have a bite’ line and expanding and exploding people fit into this parasite storyline?

The New Air Jordan

The New Air Jordan http://www.tmz.com/2008/01/09/the-new-air-jordan-no-really-its-green/ http://blog.oregonlive.com/business/2008/01/green_colors_new_air_jordan.html I went to high school and noticed all the ‘cool’ guys getting the newest Air Jordan shoes. Everyone would look at these people like they were the Sporting Gods. “Hey, look he has those new Air Jordans on. Those aren’t even out yet.” I would shrug and shake my head, because I didn’t get it. Call me old fashion, but I just never understood the reason why anyone would pay over $100 for an f’ing shoe. Then, they’d get shot over it when someone would attempt to steal them. I am aware that different shoes make a difference in the way you walk, but why follow the crowd? ((In a departure from previous rollouts, Nike will release a limited edition of the shoe to 23 U.S. retailers Jan. 25. The $230 price tag is the highest ever for an Air Jordan , Humphrey said. Larger releases on Feb. 16 and 23, pegged arou...

Datalore

Image
Datalore (Since Blayde will be reviewing a few of the first two seasons of TNG, I figured I’d throw out a few first season reviews as well. Moreover, this gives me practice for my Feature Magazine Writing class.) Given the trouble the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation had, It is surprisingly that there were a few good episodes. Datalore was one of those surprises. The story involves the Enterprise returning to the planet where another Starfleet vessel discovered Data. They discover that the entire world is dead, and they find another android that looks like Data. Datalore is one of those episodes that end up being better on repeated viewing. While the direction and acting is good, some flaws plagued many of the first season stories are present here. The biggest flaw is the Wesley Crusher angle. For some foolish reason, the writers felt the need to shoehorn Wesley Crusher into an already dense story. He just comes across as a tool and hurts the sto...
