Cop Rock revisited: Returning to crap
The series is total crap, and it gets worse as you watch it. Think of Cop Rock as Glee with guns and murder. Someone at the network decided to greenlight this sorry mess. Mixing stage musicals with the grittiness of a cop drama seems wrong, like pineapple and pizza. People know about the baby merchant song, but there is so much more to watch. It popped (pooped) into my brain for no reason.
I mean, what were they thinking?
And, the show made it to 11 episodes before it was canceled. The manner of the cancellation is amusing, too. The last episode finishes up the narrative and the show breaks the fourth wall. The actors show up and sing a final number with a fat lady singing.
Unlike Glee, the songs are all original. And, not all the numbers work. The best part about watching the show is seeing the show just stumble into the songs while making a serious drama. It just doesn’t work for TV and even the composer Mike Post. Randy Newman dipped out after a few episodes too.
Hull High was the other musical show that came out and failed in 1990. That’s for another post.
