I think it's great. Subtle, effective, old-school. I'm a TD at CNN Headline News, and we use a lot of fancy transitions, but really what people just want to see is a simple dissolve or wipe to get to the next video as soon as possible. But the transitions we use are neato, (not a technical term) so we keep them.

Still, I keep waiting for Lucas to bust out with the video toaster effects I used to love in college, and use the wipe that has a woman doing cartwheels or a baseball player swinging. We could never use those because they were cheesy and stupid, but fun for off-the-record videos.

He'll probably do it for the TV show. But, you're right the style of the movies wont be the same without the wipes. Plus, GL seems to have fun with it as well.

Starship Troopers III (Direct to Video/DVD)

Starship Troopers III? I didn’t even know anything about this movie. http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/01/09/first-look-starship-troopers-3/ I enjoy Paul Verhoeven’s work and his style. He loves mixing nudity and violence like no other. Total Recall and Basic Instinct were great movies, and they just show that he has a twisted freaky mind. When Starship Troopers came out in 97, I was more than a little disappointed with the material. However, I’ve come to enjoy it more on repeated viewing. I also liked the subtext of the Military based community that planet has in this version of the future. There was a good amount of social commentary buried in with the violence and sex. Plus, Casper Van Dien is reprising his role. I guess those late Showtime movies haven’t paid the bills. Man, this guy can’t act. Gary Devon Blum

I have bad news. My writing teacher Gary Devon Blum passed away a few days ago. This morning I receive an e-mail with his name on it, and I knew before opening it that he had died. His wife stated that he passed away. I went and visited him a week before he died. It pained me so much to see him in such a way, but I knew he’d be happy to see me. When I saw him, he opened his eyes and he looked so happy to see me appear in the doorway, despite not being able to talk. I told him how my life was going and that I’d plan to visit him again. After I left the hospital, little did I know it would be the last time I’d ever see him. He wrote a few novels and taught at a few local universities, and this was where I met him. Gary was the kind of guy that had a low voice, but was soft-spoken. I can truly say that he was gentle person and cared about others.
