Google/YouTube suggested a free movie called Phenomenon. This 90s movie stars John Travolta. It is about a blue-collar guy who gets almost superhuman mind powers and intelligence. His character goes around improving people’s lives with his newfound intelligence. There is an alien aspect to this as well.
I enjoyed this movie back in the 90s, but this movie has some major issues today. I have noticed all the strange Scientology connections. When I saw it in theaters, I was in my teens, being idealistic, naive. I like the almost new age views of expanding your mind and helping others with your ideas. I enjoyed the movie. However, my views on this movie have soured.
Given that Travolta, a known member of this stupid church, stars in this movie. Scientology pushes the belief that you can do amazing things with your mind if you free it from alien spirits. Given the alien connection, George Malley believes his powers come from an alien spaceship. In reality, it is a brain tumor that is forcing his mind to use portions of his brain that most humans can’t use. This strikes similar beliefs to Scientology.
Scientology also likes to piggyback on other faiths like Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. The movie has a freaking scene where Malley teaches the kids about knowledge through the metaphor of an apple. Did you sneak the tree knowledge into your Space Church movies? Fuck you, Travolta.
Travolta is a devout Scientologist. It encompasses his entire life. The man made one of the worst movies in the world, Battlefield Earth. The founder of the church wrote the book that the movie was based on, which has some Scientology beliefs in it as well.
Because the subject is complex, I am going to break this up.
One more thing, doesn't this poster have a Dianetics feel to it?
