While I don’t care for Star Trek Discovery and Picard had some problems, Star Trek Lower Decks is a pretty good show. I hope they give us another season despite CBS All Access going away. The story problems that Discovery has aren’t there for Lower Decks. Plus, the characters are likable and very Trek in nature. The guest star cast is comprised of former Trek stars.
You can tell the writers really like TNG and DS9. The actual show takes place after ST Nemesis and before Star Trek (09). Even though it is set in the future of the 24th century, it has a TNG season 6 feel to it. While the first episode is a little shaky, the rest of the season is pretty good. And, I like most of the cast compared to Discovery.
Everything gets referenced on this show from the Trek movies, TOS, TNG, VOY, and DS9. Heck, even the station DS9 makes a cameo. Speaking of cameos, some TNG characters do make cameo and guest star appearances. Then, the writers mock the JJ Abrams Trek movies as well.
To be fair, the show does also have an Orville vibe to it and that is a good thing. I am surprised the show didn’t take an Orville dig or reference. I recommend Lower Decks, but I don't have high hopes it will be around for a second season due to all the politics with CBS and Paramount going on right now. However, they have announced a second season.
