Nudity in Advertising

Nudity in Advertising

American Apparel is doing some interesting ads of late, which involve breasts.

((Known for being fearlessly risqué, American Apparel has yet again used shock tactics to its advantage. Its latest effort: using nudity to sell clothes. The company has rolled out a banner ad that displays a topless model – boobs, nipples and a tantalizing unzipping of her top.))

Yeah, American Apparel promotions and ads have always been ‘on the edge’. One of the topless ads has the pornstar Charlotte Stokely unzipping her top (She's on the right side, not safe at work) and showing her ‘love pillows’. Another ad has a model showing off her top too.

Unlike Abercrombie & Fitch, I really like these ads. There doesn’t seem to be any strange bi-sexual context to the American Apparel ads, just naked women. As long as they use the nude ads in adult aimed sites, I'm aright with it. Hell, I could see Burger King and White Castles using these ads methods too.

Keep in mind that by bringing out these 'nude' ads people that protest and complain about tthem are falling into the whole American Apparel plan. They want to create controversy and it is just free press for them, which is a smart idea. The world won't blow up because a clothing company shows a little skin in banners. It just makes it better.

The problem I have with these ads is the connection between nudity and clothing. If there are two concepts that are completely on the opposite sides of the spectrum, it's nudity and clothing. Are we supposed to buy these clothes in order to get naked? I'm confused. You want your models with your company clothes on, not taking them off.

I think the fact that Sasha Grey was one of those models says a lot about the direction of this campaign.

agreed, just checked out some of the photos with Sasha Grey in them, holy crap they're trying to get some controversial talk going aren't they.

She's completely nude except for a cross "Vintage necklace"

I really liked the one with Charlotte Stokely in the yellow swimsuit. She's so cute and has a great attitude in the ad.

The other ad with the fully-clothed woman suddenly showing her nipple seemed a bit gratuitous though.

Interesting that they're both porn stars.

And to respond to your question about nudity vs clothing, I have two words for you: Easy Access.

No, I wasn't talking about what she did on camera for the company... I meant the kinds of porn she does as her day job.

PJ: She does look good in her ads. lol on the Easy access point.

MC: Thanks for clearing that up.

yeah she's a bit rough and dirtier in her movies than many pornstars.

I read your post on the subject it is an interesting take on it. I think the American Appearal guy does hover into the creepier side of things.
