The quality in the scene does take a dip, probably because it was degraded while sitting in vault somewhere (In the DVD)
http://superman.markshields.com/Comment: Mark added a short clip about a subplot that was removed from the theater version of the film. Here’s the kicker, Donner added the scene with the ‘Stormtrooper’ reporting to the council and the council ordering the trooper to stop Sups’ father. (It also gives Superman’s race a darker feel, because they planned on killing his father.) In the DVD, that’s all we see or hear about this trooper. For some reason Donner left out this ten second payoff scene from his new DVD cut. (Why? It’s only 10 secs.)
George Lucas does the same thing with his added 2 min Biggs scene toward the end of Star Wars IV: A New Hope (Special Edition). Why not show the rest of Biggs scenes at least in a special feature on the DVD?
