Demolition
Man: Deleted Scenes (Part 1)
That's
John Spartan's daughter on the right. Seconds earlier, she is
smiling as her father emerges from the building.
For
giggles, I re-watched a fun action film. It is rather fitting the
things they predicted and the things they didn't. I love the small
compact cars, which they predicted. I also think there are swanky
versions of fast food joints out there. Morality tickets are very
close to becoming a thing with people policing what you have to say.
One
of the biggest issues with the movie is the third act seems a bit
uneven and unfinished. Certain character arcs are left open and plot
threads dropped. The studio got nervous about the cut of the movie
and demanded cuts. They brought in Stuart
Baird to
“save” the movie. There are three scenes worth noting cut from
the movie that would have made the third act complete. I seriously
doubt we'll ever see the footage. As I wrote before, the movie
feels a bit uneven and rushed at the end. Given these edits,
the is harmed.
One
of the biggest cuts was the entire subplot about John Spartan meeting
his now older daughter for the first time in 50 years.
From
IMDB, (( Originally,
in this movie, there were some additional scenes including Spartan
meeting his grown up daughter in the sewers amongst Edgar Friendly's
people. While cut, we do see Spartan protecting a random girl during
a shoot-out in sewers. This is his daughter. She is also seen again
in the ending scene standing next to Friendly while he is talking
with Spartan. ))
Spartan
was supposed to see her after Phoenix makes his speech to his
henchmen. Let's Check out
the script.
The woman who looked up with such interest, steps over closer. She's got to know. KATHERINE John Spartan? The Demolition Man? SPARTAN Yeah... (surprised; looks at this older woman) Do I know you? She's shaken, a tear rolls down her cheek. She brushes it away. Doesn't know how to react... Neither does he as -- KATHERINE You did. I'm your daughter. He wraps his arms around her, she him as well. SPARTAN Katie, my little Katie... KATHERINE Little Kate, I'm older than you... SPARTAN You'll always be my little girl, I don't care how old you are. (steps back) God, Katie. You're all grown up. I missed your whole life. I missed everything. KATHERINE Mom and I always talked about you. I always hoped I would see you one day. I knew I would. He holds her at arm's length admiring her. Then --- SPARTAN Tell me everything. I want to know everything about you... KATHERINE (laughing; it's fifty years) Everything? All at once? Spartan's grin, though it seems impossible, gets wider. He kisses her on the forehead. Holds her back out at arm's length, just looking at her with this great big smile... SPARTAN Yes. Absolutely everything. Start where I left off. You were six... GARCIA Spartan. Spartan's busy. GARCIA Spartan... (as Spartan ignores him; still busy) Spar... SPARTAN What! Garcia can only point: Simon Phoenix, forty feet away, giant grin, AcMag in hand, taking aim. Spartan hurls Katherine to the ground, with himself as a shield as --- SPARTAN Get down!!!
Could
you imagine seeing this scene in the movie? It would have been a
heart-warming scene. It is a real shame this scene was never shown in
the theaters or a director's cut. It would have rounded out the plot
and character development. Side Note: I can't find the actress that
played Kate Spartan. Does anyone know her name? She had speaking
lines. If the actress from this scene is around, I'd like to
talk to her.
You
can see Kate Spartan in the final cut in the last scene standing next
to Denis
Leary smiling.
There is an edit here.
A far greater crowd has gathered. Police, citizens, Scraps. They watch in silent awe and shock as Spartan re-emerges. Katherine walks up. Deadpan as her father -- KATHERINE Good to see you again, Dad. (kisses him on the cheek) Come by sometime for dinner. (re: the destruction) I'll cook. He kisses her back on the cheek. She smiles, they hug. Lenina watches from nearby.
