Star
Trek V went through many different revisions. The behind-the-scenes
drama made Shatner cut entire scenes and even cut subplots from the
movie. Even though a bigger budget and a longer cut would have
helped the movie greatly, the movie sits on a flawed premise of “what
if Kirk met God?”. That is always an issue. However, the movie
would have been at least 30% better with some scenes added back in.
The Nimbus III deleted scene would have helped.
I
think this scene should have stayed in the movie.
-Caithlin
Dar: We get to see that the Romulan Ambassador is idealistic and
volunteered to go to Nimbus III. This indicates that the Feds and
Klingons sent their reps there as punishment. It is a nice touch
because the Klingon laughs at the thought of Dar wanting to make a
difference.
-General Korrd
: Korrd gets a few more lines here. And, it is a nice touch to see
him make some dirty remarks to Dar. While it looks like he is being
a dirty old man, it is retconned into the decaying relationship
between the Romulan and Klingon powers, which leads to the political
relationship in the TNG era. I also like that Korrd does speak “Fed”
but chose not to unless insulted. Another tip to Rom and Klingon
issues is that Dar does know how to say a few Klingon cuss words.
That is also mentioned in a TNG episode.
-Korrd played by Charles Cooper: Cooper would go on to play another very old Klingon in TNG during its third and fourth seasons. Chancellor K'mpec is another version of Korrd played by Cooper. And, it gets a bit interesting because Korrd and K'mpecwould have probably met given their ages.
-Cynthia
Gouw plays Dar: Most of her stuff was left on the cutting room
floor. I've
always had a crush on Gouw. She is still a lovely lady today and
is a journalist. She is showing up to her first Trek Con soon. She
has never tried to walk away from her Trek roots and has done
recent interviews. People say you can't trust Roms, but I'd trust
Dar.
There
are a few more lines cut from this scene that hasn't surfaced on
DVD.
Reacting to Korrds stench, Caithlin holds her breathingdevice in front of her mouth.TALBOTHe doesn't speak English.CAITHLINAnd I don't speak Klingon.TALBOTI'm relieved to hear that. Please sitdown Miss Dar. Can I offer you adrink?
Here's an
interesting bit. The script has it that Talbot doesn't believe Korrd can speak English. Implying he spent years speaking to him in Klingon.
The joke is Korrd knows English but just kept it to himself. For
some reason, Shatner cut that completely of the shooting scene even
in the deleted cut. The Talbot joke is no longer there. Why? The last bit with the "bugger" is in the novelization. I remember it. It is because it would have given the movie an R-Rating in England?
KORRD (in perfect English) Screw you too! CAITHLIN He does speak English! TALBOT (surprised) Sly old bugger!
