I watched the new Scream movie and loved it. The movie came up with a new term that we’ve been seeing for years but never had a term for it. After looking through the Internet, the term has been around for a while, but I never came across it until the new Scream movie. It is called a requel. It is a part sequel but has elements of a reboot and a remake. Star Trek and Star Wars have used this new trope. Both franchises take into account the history of the earlier works but go in a new direction with a new cast. You bring back legacy characters at a reduced rate, too.
From the Urban dictionary,
requel
A sequel to movie that functions somewhere between a sequel, a reboot, and a remake. For example: Creed, Jurassic World, The Force Awakens, Mad Max: Fury Road.
