Deleted Scenes of the Klingon Attack in Star Trek the Motion Picture

Star Trek TMP:  Extra Klingon Footage Released

One of my favorite parts of the misunderstood Star Trek TMP was the Klingon opening with V’ger.  I loved the detailed model work and the new Klingon look, which was changed for ST3 a bit.  It is a nice way to reveal your bigger villain by having him or her wipe the floor with your regular series villain.

There were a few things that bothered me about the scene. What happened to the third ship?  It just disappears from the movie and we’re left with two ships.  In certain cuts, we see the Klingon captain lunge backward as if being hit.  Why did that happen?  Why did only ONE ship fire torpedoes?  They’re freaking Klingons.

Well, after 41 years, someone uncovered some never-before-seen footage from the Klingon battle with V’ger.  The missing footage explains a lot.  It explains the biggest plot hole about the missing Klingon ship.  One ship stays behind to give the retreating ships a chance to getaway.  That ship keeps firing before it is destroyed.  We also see that the V’ger energy ball only destroys the aft side of the ship.  People claim it was because the torpedoes weakened it.  So, V’ger fires another ball and completely destroys the rest of the ship.  I have also heard that the Klingon ship can separate into two parts.

Why did they delete the broken-off Klingon ship footage?

So, how did this footage come out?  Despite the three different cuts of the movie with different and added scenes, there is still footage out there.  Most of it will never be seen.  Someone owned this footage via a demo reel for the special effects company Apogee.  Apogee replaced and fixed some of the problems left behind by the fire FX company Robert Abel & Associates.

Below is the full demo reel.  I also added the BSG reel as well.
