Penn & Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors (Sega CD game): Desert Bus

Penn & Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors (Sega CD game)

Was this promotional supposed to make people buy the game?

Way back in 1995, Penn and Teller decided to make a video game for the Sega CD. It was supposed to be a completely silly game fully of grainy FMV with Penn and Teller explaining the games within the Smoke and Mirrors title. At a certain point, the company that was going to publish the game went out of business. After that, the new owners seemed to bury the game. Yet, the game surfaced online in bootlegged form.

One of the most infamous games to be leaked onto the Internet was Desert Bus. Desert Bus is a simulator game that involves you driving a bus in real time. You have to drive the bus to Vegas and back for 8 hours. Nothing really happens in the game either.

Desert Bus is completely boring, but freaking funny as hell that they made something so mundane. On Gamesetwatch, (("Remember Janet Reno? When she was taking away our rights, instead of the people who are now? Janet Reno was really against violent videogames, so we decided to do this game, Eddie's original idea, it was called 'Desert Bus.'"))

Most of the games are completely useless, but funny. I think it would have been an interesting game to rent for the Sega CD at the time and a real shame it was never released.

Here is a contest involving Desert Bus. It seems like an interesting site to check out.

What in the Sam hill?
