Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest: The Kraken

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest: The Kraken

Fans of Zimmer have always been divided by this track. Some people don’t like the heavy rock influences and they have no place in a period piece film. Other people really like the strong rock touches. Even Zimmer has admitted they he may have went too far with the theme.

It's been stated that portions of this track was influenced by the old Toccata and Fugue in D Minor And some of the lower pipe organ work in The Kraken does have a resemblance to it . (listen to it here)

Many people think this track is full of real electric guitar players, but Zimmer reveal it wasn't. (Soundtrack.net)

Here's what Zimmer said he did with the guitar sound,

((Actually, it's not an electric guitar. You know what it is? It's the orchestra put through a guitar amp and piped back into the room. As soon as they finished playing, we plugged them into a guitar amp! ))

It was a next idea.

Also from Soundtrack.net,

((Let me tell you why. If Johnny Depp modeled his character off of Keith Richards, then I needed to find a counterweight for Davey Jones, who is his antagonist. When I was trying to write the tune, the first thing I had was the organ and the music box, and that didn't make a very "heavy" character. A church organ isn't very agile for this purpose, and it's really hard to write action music for a church organ! So I thought, let me do it with the orchestra and pump it through a guitar amp. Very Lemmy from Motorhead ))
