Music Video review: Spice Girls, Say You’ll be There

Music Video review: Spice Girls Say You’ll be There

Pop-up Video version (VH1)

Music

Actually, this song is a complete departure to some of their songs on their album Spice. The music dates back to 70’s disco and 80s pop music, which has a nice dance beat. Plus, the harmonica solo is very Michael Jackson/80’s like and suits the song very well.

The vocals range from bad (Ginger Spice) to very soulful, such as Scary Spice’s solo and Sporty Spice’s singing. All in all, it’s a very catchy song. Note there is a bit of controversy over the song though.

Music Video

The video is stylized like many of those campy 70s films and the Girls actually seem to be having a lot of fun sweating in the middle of the Mojave Desert. And they look very sexy and cute in their outfits. The introduction of each Spice Girl has a retro feel to it.

The editing is fast and cuts perfectly with the music. What does not age well are the CGI effects. Where’s George Lucas to Special Edition this video?

I’m not sure how tying down a shirtless male model in the desert and leaving him for dead is a good message, but hey it’s in the video. Is that Girl Power? It would also seem that the Spice Girls have the power to shoot ‘freaking’ laser beams out of their hands. That should make defending yourself easier.

I do have a few questions though

Why is Sporty Spice using Night Vision goggles in the daytime in the middle of the desert?

Why did they kidnap the Mexican dude in the beat up pickup truck and tie him to the top of their car?

Are we going to see what happens to him when they take him home? That would make that Paris Hilton sex video look like chomp change.

Grade: B+
