Serenity review

Serenity

First off, I should say that I have never seen the show Firefly. It wasn’t on long enough for me to check it out. Then again, I don’t watch much network television anyway. So, I went into the theater not expecting much, but I really enjoyed the movie.

Serenity is a movie about a group of outlaws who lost a war to a powerful Alliance years ago. The movie at first centers on a young woman by the name of River Tam who is very important to the Alliance, but she is also a member of the Serenity crew. I found the actress who played her to be very good, playing her somewhat spooky and touching. The other actors in the movie are good as well. Two of the best ones out of the lot are Nathan Fillion (the Captain) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (the Bad Guy). Chiwetel plays the main villain with such coolness that it makes Kahn look like a tribble. If the movie has one problem, it’s that there should have been more scenes with him in it. It felt like many of his scenes where dropped.

For a 40 million dollar movie, the FX shots are very good. Loved seeing the shaky-cam effect used at the right times, and not overdone as BSG does sometimes. The music isn’t that good, but okay. I also enjoyed the fight scenes. There is a strong moral centerpiece to the story and it becomes the main point toward the end. These people put their lives out there for it.

Overall, the movie is a surprise treat to all sci-fi fans out there. Even though you may not like Firefly, you might like this movie.

Grade B+
